Learning to read starts in two places at once. One is sounding words out - letter sounds, blending, sound teams. The other is the hundred little words that turn up on nearly every page and mostly cannot be sounded out at all: the, was, said, they. This pack does both, side by side, in five minutes a day.

Print it once. Ten new words a week, a phonics page or two alongside, and a hundred flashcards that do most of the work.

1. START HERE (2 worksheets)

• The 5-Minute Daily Practice - the only page written for the grown-up. Minute 1 flash the cards, minute 2 fix the misses, minute 3 find today's words in any book, minute 4 write two from memory, minute 5 read a sentence out loud. Plus a four-week tick chart

2. EVERY LETTER, EVERY SOUND (5 worksheets)

• All 26 letters, a to z, with the sound each one makes and three example words each - ant, apple, add for a; quokka, queen, quick for q
• Trace the lower-case letter, then write it twice on your own
• Answer key with a note on the two that trip children up (letter names instead of sounds, and x sitting at the END of a word: bo-x, fo-x, si-x)

3. LISTENING GAMES (5 worksheets)

• Rhyme Time - 8 picture words, circle the one that rhymes
• Word Families - fill five word-family houses (-at, -ig, -op, -en, -ug), then cross out the odd one in five rows
• First Sounds - 12 pictures, write the sound each one starts with
• Last Sounds - 12 pictures, write the sound each one ends with
• Clap the Syllables - 12 words from one clap to three, including wombat, possum, dingo, koala, kangaroo, echidna and crocodile

4. BLENDING SOUNDS (5 worksheets)

• 40 CVC words to sound out and write - eight for each of the five short vowels (cat, hat, map, van... bed, net, pen, hen... and so on)
• Circle-the-matching-word picture rows on every page, with near-miss choices (cot / cat / cut) so guessing does not work
• Answer key for all 40

5. SOUND TEAMS (5 worksheets)

• sh, ch, th, ck and ng - two letters, one sound
• 30 words to read, trace and write (ship, shop, shed, fish, dish, wish... chip, chop, chin... this, that, then, them, with, moth... sock, rock, duck, lock, back, kick... ring, king, sing, wing, long, song)
• A circle-the-team exercise on every page, plus one whole sentence to read and trace: "The king can sing a long song."

6. SOUND BUNDLES (5 worksheets)

• 24 blend words: l-blends (bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl), r-blends (br, cr, dr, fr, gr, tr), s-blends (sk, sm, sn, sp, st, sw) and end blends (nd, nt, mp, st, lt, lk)
• Blends Word Search - a 10x10 grid hiding FLAG, CRAB, DRUM, SKIP, STOP, SWIM, HAND and JUMP, then write a word of your own for six blends
• Explains the difference between a blend and a sound team, in words a child understands

7 & 8. THE FIRST 100 WORDS - SETS 1 TO 10 (20 worksheets)

• Ten sets of ten words. Set 1 is the very first ten - the, and, a, I, to, is, in, it, of, was - and the sets carry on through words about us, words that join ideas, words for telling, words about home, words for doing, words about things, words for looking back, asking words and the wondering words - who, why, will, would and could among them
• Every set gets TWO pages. Page one: read it, trace it, write it, with a tick box for each word. Page two: a Word Hunt to colour, two full sentences to read and trace, and a choose-the-missing-word question
• Answer keys list each set's ten words in order, the count for all three hunt words, and the missing-word answer for every hunt page

9. FLASHCARDS TO CUT OUT (12 sheets)

Answer Keys That Actually Help

Seven answer keys, one per teaching chapter, marked FOR GROWN-UPS. They do not just list the right answer - five "If your child got this wrong" notes explain what the mistake means. If they pick cat/cup instead of cat/hat they are listening to the front of the word, not the ending. If they write bu-s instead of bus they stopped one sound too early.

Print Tips

• Print the twelve flashcard sheets (pages 67-78) first, on card if you have it, and cut them up before you start. They do most of the work
• Print the progress chart and stick it on the fridge - colouring in 100 squares is worth a lot of encouragement
• Print the rest a chapter at a time, or the whole thing at once and staple it
• Scissors needed for the flashcards. Everything else needs a pencil and five minutes
• Works on tablets too - import into GoodNotes, Notability or Xodo and write with a stylus
